artist's statement & bio

Catherine moved to Issaquah in 1999 from Dallas, TX, following careers as Owner of an office leasing company; Registrar for Ernst & Young Technology Training Center; and business analyst for GTE video-on-demand. Today, Catherine's an artist, etcher and printmaker whose training includes portrait, figure drawing, and printmaking at Pratt Fine Arts Center; portrait and realism drawing by Seattle artist Julia Hensley; and watercolor, copper etching & mono-printmaking from Kirkland Arts Center.

"Discovering the art of etching was ‘love at first touch’. Drawing gently, slowly with the thin stylus directly onto the smooth copper surface recalled the girlhood pleasure of delicate sewing with a needle and thread, and the tactile fun of practicing grammar school cursive writing using those fat yellow pencils. Inspirations for the linework in my art include 1900’s art deco illustrator, André Marty, and a bit of neuro-science writing by Steven Pinker: Our subconscious longings protectively alter what we perceive to be our memories.

To create my etchings I use sturdy lovely tools, watercolors, gouache, colorful hand-made rice papers, and many of the same methods and processes used by etchers of antiquity such as Albrecht Duerer, Rembrandt, and Picasso. Often my visual expression relates hopeful, curious or playful imagery hinting of graceful, elegant times past while its story speaks to tender, timeless conversations and memories we’ve all experienced, wished we’d had, or silently longed for.”
